Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Amersham groupage firm Transaction is seeking small haulage companies to build up business in Kent, East Anglia and the Bristol area.

Transaction, whose contracts include serving food, footwear and pharmaceutical companies, turns over around £1.25m a year and wants agents to develop business on a reciprocal basis.

"We're looking for companies like ourselves," says director Bob Wood, "to work with us as opposed to for us. We want young progressive companies who are interested in developing their own business in new areas. They can run into our depot in Amersham and in exchange we would give them distribution in their neck of the woods."

Transaction distributes for Republic of Ireland agent Intel and Belfast company Metro; Wood says the company's fish business yields around £0.5m turnover a year and agents could tap this network.

Wood, formerly a driver with Cave Wood, started the business in 1985 with partner Adrian Johnston, who formerly worked for Cave Wood's German export division. Transaction now runs 10 vehicles out of its Amersham depot and employs eight staff.

"I want to take on smaller established businesses with up to five trucks or so, and preferably with a small depot not some Joe operating out of his house," says Wood.
