• Land Rover has made a number of changes to the 90/ 110/130 range for the 1991 model year, including the deletion of the old 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine, which is replaced by the 200 Tdi, launched last year in the Discovery.
The range gets a new name, "Defender" and uprated interiors for the 42-year-old vehicles. The 90 County station wagon will be dropped, leaving only the 110 in County trim, although the standard 90 station wagon stays.
Features of the new 200Tdi include direct-injection using Bosch two-spring injectors and VE fuel injection pump, an in tercooler integrated with the radiator and a Garrett 125 turbocharger in place of the T2.
With 80kW (107hp) on tap, the 200Tdi produces 26% more power than the old 2.5 turbodiesel and 25% more torque, 255Nm (1881bft) at the same 1,800rpm. Land Rover claims that fuel consumption is reduced by 25% across the range, while top speed is up by an average of 13%.
Specification changes includes re-sited front seats, a new cubby box incorporating a lockable glove box, a courtesy light operated by the front doors, an improved wash/wipe programme and new seat trim. Externally, the Defender carries new badging, side stripes and paint options, adding a new white and grey to existing colours.
The new models will be launched at the Motor Show and go on sale immediately afterwards.
• Also new from Land Rover at the show will be a five-door version of the Discovery.
