111 Esso tanker driver George Masson is this year's Lorry Driver of the Year. He won the award last Sunday in a hard-fought contest at the Cranfield Institute of Technology.
Aberdeen-based Masson, who normally drives a Foden, drove a Renault Master van, a Volvo FL7 tipper, a Ford Cargo box van, an ERE articulated tanker and a Volvo F6 removals van through a series of manoeuvres to win the title. He also had to complete a written test and a test of his knowledge of road signs in the championship final.
Masson has been driving for Esso for 14 years and has entered the lorry driver of the year competition on three previous occasions. In 1978 he came third in the national final.
This year Masson won the individual trophy for vehicles between 121/2 metres and 14 metres in length (the Hope Anti-Jack Knife Trophy), and the Coventry Trophy, the Dodge Truck Silver Salver, a cheque for £500, a study course for the Certificate of Professional Competence, a course for graduate membership of the Institute of Transport Administration, an inscribed Tankard and a £25 book token, all for winning the championship final.
Masson's wife Patricia said after the award ceremony, "Well I'm right chuffed."
