• The five-vehicle PSV operator's licence held by Irvine independent James Gaw, trading as Gaw's Coaches, has been revoked by the Scottish traffic commissioner Hugh McNamara at an Ayr public enquiry.

It was Gaw's fourth appearance at disciplinary proceedings. On the last occasion, in June 1985, the duration of his licence was curtailed and the number of vehicles authorised reduced from six to five.

Evidence was given of seven immediate prohibitions imposed on his vehicles since April following spot checks, test station inspections and a fleet check. Gaw maintained that some of the defects had arisen during test, that a broken steering box bracket was a manufacturer fault and that the two vehicles prohibited during a fleet check were not in use despite the vehicle examiner saying that they were displaying both excise licence and 0-licence discs. Revoking the licence McNamara said that the vehicles had been found to be seriously defective both in the garage and on the road. He was afraid that Gaw had come to the end of the road and, as traffic commissioner, could not have confidence in him ever becoming a fit operator.
