Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Among the exhibits on the Polymer Engineering stand of Dunlop at Earls Court will be several suspension units employing rubber as the spring medium. Units on show will include the well-known Metalastik toggle-link suspension which has been successfully employed on the Daimler Roadliner chassis, and the sandwich rubber unit used in the Norde system which is gaining popularity with tanker operators.

Of particular interest will be a unit which, although familiar in design to many fleet engineers, is in fact a completely new application of an old device. This is the Metacone semi-trailer suspension unit which has been developed from the engine-mounting unit of the same name which has been in use for many years. The characteristics of the Metacone allow it to give the cushioning effects required from a suspension while it is also resilient enough to provide the necessary oscillation required in a walking beam design. This dispenses with the need for heavily stressed mechanical pivots at this point.
