Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

the standing and running costs relating to (a) an eight-wheeled rigid tipper with a payload of 16 tons and (b) an articulated flat with a similar payload?

AThe standing costs for a 16-ton rigid

given in our 1968 Tables of Operating Costs are : licences 135s 9d.. wages 317s. 3d., rent and rates 36s 3d., insurance 127s., interest on capital 210s., giving a total of 826s. 3d. per week. or 247.88d. per hour. The running costs depend upon the mileage covered per week, but assuming a weekly mileage of 400 miles the running costs are: 7.31d. per mile, lubricants 0.33d., tyres 2.75d., maintenance 5.06d., depreciation 3.99d., making a total of 19.44d. per mile. The total operating cost per mile is then 44.23d.

These figures relate primarily to an eightwheeled rigid haulage model, since the Tables give separate tipper costings only up to 7ton payloads, so you may need to allow more for maintenance and tyres and you will, in any case, have to adjust these average figures to suit your own particular operations.

For a 16-ton articulated platform vehicle the equivalent figures are as follows: licences 153s. 6d., wages 317s. 3d.. rent and rates 41s. 3d., insurance 113s. 9d., interest 150s. 6d., making a total of 776s. 3d. per week or 232.88d. per hour. Again assuming 400 miles average running per week, the running costs are: fuel 7.31d., lubricants 0.33d., tyres 3.32d., maintenance 5.06d., depreciation 3.19d.. making a total of 19.21d. per mile. The total operating cost is therefore 42.5d. per mile.

These figures are based on averages derived from practical experience built up over the years. In order to be certain of the manner in which they should be interpreted for your own operations we suggest that you study the explanations given in the 1968 Tables of Operating Costs prepared by COMMERCIAL MOTOR and obtainable from Newnes Sales Department, The Hamiyn Group, The Centre, Feltham, Middlesex, price 7s. Bd. including postage.
