Hydraulic coupling system

The Lockheed-Avery Division of Lockheed Precision Products Ltd.. a member company of the all-British Automotive Products Group, has announced a hydraulic coupling system designed for high flow rates of up to 25 gpm at 3,000 p.s.i.

The new coupling, a kin. BSP ball-lock type, has been designed for one-handed operation -enabling the unit to be used in normally inaccessible positions. On connection the union half is pushed into the locked position ; to disconnect, the knurled sleeve is pulled back and remains in position ready for reconnection.

The main coupling bodies are of cadmiumplated steel, the unit normally being supplied with nitrite seals. A swivel mounting can be specified to permit angular movement. The new 4-in. Lockheed-Avery coupling can be provided with an instant "breakaway" facility by mounting the unit by its knurled ring and fitting a flexible connection behind the fixed coupling half. When a pull is applied to the hose on the union half the coupling is automatically disconnected, the poppet valve in both halves returning immediately to the sealed position.

High-pressure washer

The latest Kina super high-pressure washer from Jaggard Bros. Ltd., model 1AE-3, delivers water at 700 psi. (49 kgm/cm2) and is the latest addition to this wholly British

10 developed range of nine industrial high

pressure washers.

High-pressure washers are claimed to be replacing steam cleaners because of their low initial cost, low operating cost, safety factor, portability, versatility and ease of operation. Kina is claimed to be the largest, most versatile and portable range of pressure washers available in Great Britain and on the Continent.

All the models are available as singleor three-phase versions and with voltages of 110V, 220/240V and 380/440V. An automatic detergent metering control at no extra cost on the Kina models 1AE-2, 1AE-3 and 4A-G is shortly to be introduced in addition to standard manual control already fitted, so ensuring detergent spraying irrespective of operating conditions. This feature will also be introduced on models 9AE-1, 9AE-2 and 9A-G.

Ball and roller

Designed to act as conveyor units for pallets and heavy unit loads when installed in a vehicle, container, aircraft or transit shed, new types of lightweight ball and roller units have been introduced by J. Collis and Sons Ltd. A special injection-moulded plastics housing is used which simplifies assembly and reduces first cost. It also has a high structural strength, enables overall dimensions to be reduced, facilitates stripping for maintenance and offers resistance to the majority of acids and alkalis.

Based on balls of lin.-diameter, the standard ball units are available with raised mountings, flush mountings or flush cushion mountings. The standard roller units are fitted with rollers having a diameter of lin. and a width of 4in. Made by: J. Collis and Sons Ltd., Regent Square, London, WC1.

Container loading truck

The tyre contact pressure of a fully laden EFC 30/24 container loading fork-lift truck, recently announced by Wessex Industries (Poole) Ltd., is only 222 psi., which compares with a pressure of 273 psi. stipulated as the maximum allowable for container floors in the BS specification 3951,1965. Designed to provide safe entry into containers. the truck has a Wessex high-low-ratio two-stage mast providing a lift of 138in. from its closed height of' 83in. which is suitable for entering a container.

A sideshift. built into the carriage plate, affords 3in. of movement on either side of the central position to facilitate close stacking of pallets. Sideshift. lift and tilt motions are controlled through a gear-lift pump and feathering valves, giving precise control of handling. A flow-control valve enables dropping the load to be avoided in the event of hydraulic failure.

A Wessex carbon pile is used to control speed and gives stepless acceleration from the instant the accelerator pedal is depressed until full speed is attained. The power required can thus be infinitely varied to inch the truck into position under all operating conditions.

The offset driver's seat is positioned to give all-round visibility, is adjustable for reach and rake and has a built-in shock absorber. Of the totally-enclosed type, the four-pole serieswound traction motor develops 2.3 hp at 1.400 rpm. It operates on 28V.

Conveyors

Ranges of powered belt conveyors of the level type or inclined up to 30deg and wheel conveyor equipment of the roller and gravity type have been announced by the Camino-Dexion Group of Companies following acquisition of the manufacturing and selling rights of the conveyors marketed by Stratford Auto Flow Systems Ltd. The conveyors will be produced and marketed by Dexion Stratford Auto Flow Systems Ltd.

Spur sections, deflectors and power curves are included in the range of level line roller conveyors of the powered belt systems. Accumulation conveyors cater for loads of any weight or size that can be conveyed on the normal Dexion roller track.

The roller and gravity wheel conveyor equipment is available with a range of rollers designed to handle loads up to 640Ib per roller and is offered in section lengths of 5ft and 10ft. Widths and pitches cover a wide variety of applications, The rollers have springloaded shafts which provide for easy replacement or change of pitch with little or no interruption in conveyor operation.

Flasher unit

The transistorised flasher unit made by Flexible Lamps Ltd., specially designed to operate indicators on trailers and caravans, will be shown for the first time at the Commercial Motor Show.

This unit, unaffected by vibration, contains no moving parts requiring adjustment, and will operate indicator lamps on a trailer or caravan without any modification or alteration.

When the seven-pin plug is connected to the trailer or caravan, it operates the indicator lamps at the same flashing frequency and constant brilliance, irrespective of the number of bulbs connected within the capacity of the unit. It also gives a warning via a monitoring lamp to the driver should any lamp fail either on the trailer or caravan when the warning lamp ceases to operate.

By the addition of a simple switch, certain models are capable of operating simultaneously all indicator lamps on both sides of a vehicle and trailer in the event of vehicle breakdown.

Synthetic enamel

Gipspeed, a fast air-drying synthetic enamel for the economic re-spraying of smaller vans and medium-sized commercial vehicles has been introduced by General and Industrial Paints Ltd.

Considerable development and field trials have led to a product which under reasonable shop conditions will touch dry in 20min. Care has been taken to give good spray characteristics as well as high build, durability and gloss.

Gipspeed can be used for both hot and cold spray, and it is available immediately in 50 car and commercial vehicle manufacturers' colours. It will be incorporated into G.I.P.'s paint-mixing scheme later in the year, and this will provide a choice of some 400 colours.

In view of its extremely rapid drying time, Gipspeed is not recommended for use on large commercial vehicles.

Protective spray

An engine-protection spray called Porzelack will be on the market by the autumn. It is a spray system which protects all metal work from corrosion and paintwork from chipping, and it seals the electric wiring points.

Aerosol packs of the two materials, Porzelack Engine Cleaner and Porzelack Engine Glaze, are sold separately.

The former is sprayed on the engine and given a few minutes to penetrate grease and dust, when it is hosed off. The engine is started up to clear the last drips of water and allowed to cool down.

Porzelack Engine Glaze is then sprayed on and given approximately 30 min. to dry when it produces an easily wiped, longlasting high-gloss plastic coat that protects engine components and paintwork from rust, corrosion and chipping.

Oil Filter Wrench Set

From J, W, Pickavant comes an oil filter wrench set comprising six flexible bands, plus a tension key which has a swivel hexagcin drive. Filter units up to 4-}in. diameter can be accommodated. When torque is applied to the tension key, the self-generating grip of the flexible band is always greater than the turning force required to release a filter from the cylinder block fitting.

The action can be reversed when fitting a new filter which requires more than handtightening in order to create an effective seal.
