1 inquiry into internal transport, one of which advised the Government to abandon over half the rail network of Coras Iompair Eireann, came under fire from the trade unions last week. The Provisional United Trades Union Organization said that these proposals would involve "the virtual destruction of the railway system," and urged their rejection. A statement said: "Railways remain essential and must continue to be the backbone of the transport system."

P.U.T.U.O. pointed out that no estimate of the increased cost of road maintenance, road vehicles, fuel imports, loss of tourist trade, and adverse repercussions on industrial development had been made.

They suggested that the introduction in Eire of the new merchandise charges scheme operated by British Railways could win additional traffic to C.I.F. The organization believed that illegal haulage was having a seriously detrimental effect on C.I.E.'s finances, and agreed with the recommendation of statutorily prescribed minimum fines, steeply progressive for subsequent convictions.
