Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN excursion business operated from one originating point with waitingroom facilities and Without intermediate picking-up points could not give better service than competitors whose catchment area involved picking up over a wide area, the North Western Traffic Commissioners decided at Manchester. last week.

Ralph Renton, Ltd., Hollinwood, were seeking 100 per cent increase in their vehicle allowance, claiming that there was an unsatisfied demand for excursions from Hollinwood. There were nine objectors.

In evidence, Mr. Renton said thata shortage of facilities had increased gradually, and become more serious.

For British Railways, Mr. T. B. Atkinson submitted that Renton's had not proved need. An analysis of their operations revealed that over a period they had vacant seats, whilst no destinations had been shown in their figures. It was, therefore, impossible to test the true position.

Mr. James Booth, for the applicants, pointed out that their basic allowance was one vehicle, with two on Saturdays and three during local and general holidays. On 207 days last year they had operated to capacity, and 800 signatures had been collected from people turned away.

Mr. F.. Williamson, chairman, said the Commissioners were not satisfied. The application was the subject of nine objections, and the Qroduction of detailed figures of previous operations was an elementary requirement. It had not been complied with and the supporting evidence was unconvincing. The application was refused.
