• Andrew English conlcudes his account of driving a Bedford Midi to Greece: After the debacle at the Greek customs we are wary of looking forward to the next few days. Having delivered the sports goods to the children in Thesalonica, we continue our journey towards Olympia, stopping overnight at Athens.
The roads are not quite as bad as those in Yugoslavia, but the Greek driving definitely is.
We finally make it to Olympia on Friday. It is a small town, with loads of tourists and Hong Kong plastic gnome shops. The most disappointing part is the ancient stadium, which is a sandy track surrounded by an oval grassed bank. The ruins themselves are spectacular, but the Greek problem raises its head once more.
Despite all the arrangements that have been made, the museum staff speak no English, and have no knowledge of us, or our desire to take some photographs. "Come back Monday," they say. We explain that we will have left on Monday, but it seems to do no good. Finally we drive around the back of the stadium, through a river, a grz pit, a flock of sheep, and ur unmade road that must he `4 (1-in-4), to take the photos with the ruins in the background. A 4x4 version wot have done wonders for our peace of mind, but the 4x2 Midi manages all this in its stride. The van gets a light coating of mud, we get covered, but we're there.
