Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

and the use of lower capacity tyres, gives the 96kW (130hp) S08-130 a kerbweight of 2,980kg on a 4.45m wheelbase.

The first purpose-built Renault Bus chassis for the UK is the 51/53 seater PRIOOZ, which is offered with a range of three power options at 129kW (175hp), 144kW (196hp) and 176kW (240hp).

The bodywork is a joint project produced by Northern Counties of Wigan, which has expanded its manufacturing facilities with a new paint shop and tilt facility for the PR100.2.

SCANRA

• Scania aims to add another IBCAM gold medal to its collection for the Topline high-roof cab on its premier exhibit and flagship, the R143A 6x 2/4R. It may also receive one for the entertainment value of its short but highly amusing head-to-head video by Mel Smith and Gryff Rhys Jones which promotes Scania's Lifeline support services.

The 52-tonne-GCW-rated twin-steer R143 on show has the slightly more powerful 320kW (435hp) 14.2-litre veeeight engine. It features parabolic springs front and rear with air on the second steer axle.

Major featurs of the 143's Topline cab are a 220mm increase in headroom and a passenger seat that can be moved to the front or rear cab wall.

More power has also been added to the 1I-litre engine in Scania's R113MA 6x2, displayed with a trailing lift axle. Badged as the 360, the 260kW (354hp) unit drives through a GR871 10-speed range-change gearbox. Multi-leaf suspension on the drive axle has balance beams to allow the rear axle to be lifted.

Scania also has one of its lightest 32.5/ 38-tonners on its stand: a P-cabbed 93MA with the 205kW (275hp)-rated 8.5-litre engine and two or three axles.

Alongside it is a P113 4x2 which is similar but uses the 225kW (306hp) 11litre diesel and, although rated at 48 tonnes, is intended for tri-axle trailer use, at 38 tonnes GCW.

An example of Scania's Urban 17-tonne rigid, which is designed to accept a maximum body length with minimum cab gap, is on show with a 5.0m-wheelbase eight-wheeled tipper chassis. Its 202kW 11-litre DSC9-02 engine and GR871 range-change gearbox are typical options for site work.

,SEDDON ATKINSON, • After 14 years' production of the 400series Seddon Atkinson has a brand new vehicle to show. It features the same cab as the Pegasso Troner and Daf 95-series, but with a new chassis, driveline and suspension package.

Two 10-litre and three 14-litre Cummins engines provide a range of power options from 224kW (300hp) to 298kW (400hp), but Eaton's Twin Splitter 12-speed gearbox is the only choice of transmission throughout the range.

Seddon Atkinson uses its own front axle, fitted with Rockwell S Cam brakes, while at the rear the latest Rockwell single-reduction axle is used. There are three cabs to choose from: a short day version and a twin-berth sleeper with a standard or high roof.

S111"YR TRUCKS UK • Steyr-Daimler-Puch, through its newly-formed UK subsidiary Steyr Trucks UK, is making its first appearance at the show and hopes to place up to 300 trucks on the British market next year, increasing to 1,000 units within four years.

The truck types on offer are two 13tonners with 101kW (136hp) and 132kW (I77hp) engines; two at 17 tonnes with 132kW (177hp) and 156kW (210hp) ratings; and two tractive units with 209kW (280hp) and 231kW (310hp) engines, allowing operation up to 38 tonnes.

All models are equipped with Eaton manual gearboxes. The 19S28 and 19531 tractive units use the Eaton Twin-Splitter transmission with a Rockwell singlereduction rear axle. The medium and heavy-duty ranges have different cabs. • The 17-tonne models are specified with a 7.1-tonne GKN front axle providing tolerance for fore-and-aft load positioning.

TOYOTA

• Toyota's eight-seater Spacecruiser comes with two sunroofs, and a restyled front end to cut down on wind noise. Rool rails are now standard. An audible indicator gives warning of brake wear, new brake hoses are designed to improve brake-pedal feel and a lighter clutch mechanism is specified to reduce clutchpedal effort. Its two-litre OHV petrol engine drives via a five-speed manual or three-speed-plus-overdrive automatic gearbox.

The Landcluiser 11, introduced just six months ago, is powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel unit. Improvements include added anti-rust protection with the use of extra spot sealer around the sun roof, wider application of zinc primer and an additional intermediate coat of paint.

The 1.5-litre Liteace gets a larger rear window heater to improve demisting, revamped gear linkage and also an audible warning for brake pad wear.

VOLVO BUSES

• Volvo Trucks will not be at the NEC this year, but Volvo Bus will with the BlOM MkIII coach chassis which was announced earlier this year.

More power and torque — 193kW (262hp) and 1,070Nm (789lbft) — is produced by the new charge-cooled THD102KA engine. Extra low-speed torque is claimed to improve fuel consumption and provide higher thermal efficiency with lower emissions.

The higher-powered THD102KD, whicf is rated at 250kW (340hp), is the standard power unit for both GLE and B 10MT chassis, while the 102KA is offered as an option to the existing THD101 power unit on the GL.

Volvo's seven-speed G7 gearbox with A EGS is developed from units used on the truck range. The EGS's electropneumatic system is controlled from an H-gate selector.

The front axle has been redesigned to raise its capacity to 7.5 tonnes, which in turn increases the B1OM MkII's design weight to 18 tonnes.

The steering box has been relocated below the frame and uses longer steering arms to reduce its turning circle. Front suspension incorporates four shock absorbers with the front axle located by Vmounting and longitudinal bars.
