to the environmental challenge by its board two years ago. Since then, its 'Econet' strategy has flourished, with a major part of it being 'Three Green Balls' green miles, driver training for better mpg and focus on utilities. It has completed its second carbon footprinting exercise.

Bibby has used material from the Carbon Trust to emphasise its messages at every depot posters, light switch stickers and flyers, "We have communication about this at every level of the business," says Steve Potter, operations director. "The annual management conference has the environment as a specific topic and driver-trainers build environmental awareness into driver training."

Bibby has essentially a practical approach, and staff are constantly informed of the policy as the workplace is transformed around them. "Many of our initiatives are visible, For example, changing all of the lightbulbs in the depots and offices is an obvious activity, and it gives you the opportunity to brief people on the reasons and benefits as it happens. Equally, the power busters which all office plugs now fit into turn off all equipment at night. The staff are all very aware of these and how they work." The company also keeps everyone up to date via regular newsletters. Overall, Potter feels that staff engagement is high. "It's very hard to argue against it, because it works commercially and environmentally," he says.
