bust at Poole
A DORSET DRIVER has appeared in court charged with attempting to smuggle cannabis worth £500,000 into the UK.
Martin Pettitt, of Northboume, was arrested after 193kg of cannabis was found inside his truck as it arrived at Poole Ferryport on Friday 31 October.
Pettitt pleaded not guilty to the offence at Bournemouth magistrates' court last Wednesday (5 November) and was later released on conditional bail. His committal hearing will take place on 17 December.
Customs spokesman Bob Gaiger says: "This was an excellent detection by one of the new Customs mobile teams. It clearly demonstrates the importance of our new method of working. In line with the government's drugs strategy, Customs' main priority relating to drugs is to reduce the availability of Class A drugs. But we continue to uphold the law relating to other illegal drugs, including cannabis."
