• Tibbet and Britten's Clothing and Textile Division has bought six ERF Ed 1.30 ESP 4x2 trac. tors following an ERF-organised "Fuel Duel". An ECI 1 returned just over 11.35mpg, compared with 10.5mpg on the company's Leyland Daf 76.300 tractors.

The Cummins ESP engine develops 305hp on flat or down hill roads but increases to 340hp on an incline. The units are plated at just 26 tonnes GVW but, according to fleet engineer Dennis Collyer, the company has always over-specified to achieve high reliability.

"We like to keep our trucks for seven years so reliability is an important factor," he adds. "The fuel cost saving will also be substantial as we will be covering over 100,000 miles a year on the Marks & Spencer contract."

ERF marketing manager Matt Thompson says: "The ESP engine has a fairly low profile and we don't think it's particularly right for the UK market. It's most suitable for diminishing-load operators."

ERF has previously sold ESPequipped tractive units to the supermarket chain Morrisons.
