A SHROPSHIRE operator has been fined after a series of overloading offences came to light.

The charges arose from checks made on lorries carrying material from a quarry at Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury, said David Roberts, prosecuting for Shropshire County Council.

Richard Douglas Edwards, trading as R. Doug Edwards' Contractors, of Hadnall, near Shrewsbury, faced 36 charges of exceeding the maximum permitted weight with two of his vehicles. He was fined £20 on each charge.

Two drivers working for Edwards were also before the court. Graham James Parry of Hadnall, admitted 15 offences of using vehicles exceeding the permitted gross weight and was fined £300 — E20 on each charge — with £50 costs. Barry Cecil Jones of Pulverbatch, near Shrewsbury, admitted 21 similar offences and was fined £420 — £20 on each — with £50 costs, Mr Roberts, Shropshire's chief trading standards officer, said the charges arose from an initial check on one vehicle which led to 75 weighbridge tickets being examined covering the period from March 1 to July 7 this year. These revealed overloading on 51 occasions but the 15 charges for this lorry related only to instances where the overloading exceeded 11.2 per cent. The highest overloading was 27.7 per cent.

Checks on the second vehicle led tp 66 weighbridge tickets being checked and these revealed overloading 54 times.
