Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE ROAD Haulage Association's going down without a fight, and Insurance Services, the company Bain Dawes.

While RHA director general Freddie Plaskett said last month that he hoped an accommodation might be reached whereby members' existing connections with the panel would not be prejudiced, the panel this week issued a statement indicating it is still very much in business.

It read: "It was agreed that, notwithstanding the Road Haulage Association's announcement of the formation of RHA Insurance Services, the panel of brokers, having served the industry on insurance matters for over 30 years, will: • continue to exist as an advisory insurance service and brokers to the road haulage industry in general, and • continue to give help and service to their many existing clients of international and UK haulage companies."

Roy Nelson, a director of the Ernest Notcutt Group said this week that the panel did not want the industry to lose the experience which it has built up over more than 30 years' association with the RHA.

He said that the companies have been providing insurance services to many road transport operators, not just to RHA members, and they consider that their expertise will continue to be of value to road transport.

Mr Nelson said the panel is disappointed that it has lost its direct association with the RHA, as he felt a good relationship had been developed, but he said he did not see the new RHA company as a threat to the panel's own share of the market.

He added that the panel members regard the RHA company as "another broker working in the field" and to that extent it must be looked upon as a competitor.

The other panel members are E. Nugent Linaker, Jones Tiffany, Reed Stenhouse UK, Hogg Robinson (Scotland), H. Stephenson and Company, and Ridley Devine and Company.

Bain Dawes director Brian Johnson is managing director of RHA Insurance Services, with Bain Dawes-appointed directors Brian Dawes, Brian Marsh, and Keith Scott, and RHA-appointed Freddie Plaskett (director general), Len Harper (secretary designate), and Ted Haines (executive board member).
