• by Peter Lawton Tesco is to cut its Vehicle Excise Duty by £600,000 a year by putting into service 600 new Scanias fitted with particulate traps.

The Tosco fleet will be joined by 400 Scania tractors this year and another 200 next year, all fitted with Eminox continuous regenerating traps. Most of the new units are P94DA4x2NA 310s, but 23 P124i_A6x2NA 360s will be included for fuel distribution duties.

Tesco Distribution is taking advantage of the Budget offer of £1,000 VED rebates on all CRT-equipped units. The Scanias are expected to stay in service for five years, covering about 160,000km a year.

Eight different tractors were put through eight-week service trials before the order was placed: Tesco says it was impressed with the Scanias' fuel consumption, price and maintenance costs.

The new units will account for more than half the company's fleet, which includes 1,000 tractors and 2,000 trailers. Tesco has also specced Soania's new Network First computer system in a bid to drive down distribution costs.

The chain's association with Scania dates from 1992, when it bought 28 units.
