• I lauliers are demanding that roads minister Kenneth Carlisle gives personal attention to making drivers' appeals fairer following loss of licence on medical grounds.
Their case was strengthened this week with the release of figures showing that only a handful of driver appeals are succeeding.
Last year 12,379 licences were revoked on medical grounds— but only two appeals were allowed. That compares with 13 successful appeals out of 13,381 revocations in 1991.
The campaign for independent medical advice to be made available on appeal is centred on a call for cases to be heard by the Department of Health's regional medical boards in England and Wales, instead of magistrates.
Under the Road Traffic Act drivers may provide their own medical witness, but they have to pay for this themselves,
