Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Evolve is a range of three new cold cleaning solvents introduced by ICI with the aim of replacing ozone-depleting methyl chloroform-based products. The three — CH10, II and 12 have flash points of 48 or 58°C and are ideal for degreasing by clipping, brushing, wiping with a cloth and spraying. says ICI.

CH10 is suitable for general cleaning and has a ftashpoint of 58°C. With its lower flashpoint (48°C), CI Il 1 can be used where a shorter drying time is required, such as cleaning paintwork prior to spraying. For more demanding operations (engine parts and the like) C1112 is a more aggressive solvent with a flashpoint of 58°C.

While the range is more expensive than methyl chloroform, the company says that unit cleaning costs will remain the same. This is because less product will be needed, it will be dirtier when exhausted, making recycling less viable, and it can be incinerated after use.

As Evolve is made from puni tied hydrocarbons, it will count towards Volatile Organic Compounds totals under the Environmental Protection Act and is not recyclable.

Evolve is not suitable for some applications like spray gun cleaning and longer drying times may cause problems in other cases. Other products will be launched to cover these areas, says ICI. To help customers, it has set up Solve-Care to give advice on solvent use and handling and the suitability of the Evolve range for certain applications.
