THE first vehicle to be equipped with R. W. INorde rubber suspension applied to twin.rive tandem axles has been announced by he makers of the suspension, North Derbyhire Engineering Co. Ltd., Darley Dale, )erbys, who undertook the third-axle conersion for R. Cripps and Co. Ltd., Nottingam, the body builders.
Designed for the operators, Simms Sons ind Cooke Ltd., Nottingham, to carry actory-built housing sections and a Scandia .-ton front-of-body hydraulic crane, the 'chicle is based on a Commer CCG W 887 hassis, powered by a Commer 3D 215 twotroke diesel developing 135 b.h.p. and xtended to accommodate a 22 ft. body Fehind the crane, the wheelbase of the vehicle Low being 16 ft. Power is transmitted through six-speed overdrive gearbox to Centrax iears driving axles having a ratio of 7.2 to 1 nd fitted with a third differential. The calulated road speed in 5th gear is 38 m.p.h. nd 48 m.p.h. in overdrive, whilst the theoetical gradeability is 30 per cent.
Other detailed features include Girling air brakes with 15.5 in. by 8 in. drums, 9.00-20 tyres and 10-stud hubs.
It will be recalled that the axles are carried on two oscillating beams pivotly mounted centrally on brackets, each of which carries Metalastik sandwich-type rubber bushes. These are located in V formation between the inclined faces of the bracket and parallel faces on a dropped extension of the chassis and give a progressive spring rate by virtue of the fact that they act in compression and (increasingly) in shear.
The axles arc stabilized by A frames and a telescopic shock absorber is installed on each side between the spring bracket and the chassis. Bump rubbers are fitted and the A frames are rubber bushed.
Steel bushes are employed for the bearings of the oscillating beams.
