James Pollock and Ronald C. Dougal have been appointed directors of Albion Motors Ltd., Glasgow. Mr. Pollock has been factory manager at the Yoker plant and service manager for the past two years. He served his time with Albion Motors and was assistant works manager at the main plant at Scotstoun for four years before working for Ashok Leyland in Madras, India for a time. On return to Scotland he effected a major reorganization of the service department. Mr. Dougal has been commercial manager at the Yoker plant since 1964.
J. A. Sheldon has been appoided district manager, North Midlands, of British Road Services Ltd. He was formerly commercial officer, South Western and South Wales district. C. H. Brigden, formerly traffic officer, BRS Federation Ltd., has been appointed traffic officer of BRS Parcels Ltd. He was formerly with Transport Services Ltd., which was acquired by BRS in 1948. J. A. Dow will succeed Mr. Brigden as traffic officer. He joined BRS in 1950.
H. E. Hill, chairman of the Birfield Group, has joined the board of Simms Motor and Electronics Corporation Ltd.
Mr. F. H. Woodward has been appointed manager, transport services of Plessey (UK) Ltd. His successor as manager of dispatch and transport departments, Burton Tailoring Ltd., is Mr. H. Folhigg.
William Barnett, a 24-year-old Birmingham student, has been awarded the Herbert Crow Prize for outstanding success in examinations on road transport in 1965. The prize, valued at 12 guineas, is presented each year by The Worshipful Company of Carmen to the candidate who qualifies for the award of the diploma in Road Transport and obtains the highest aggregate of marks in five papers. Before starting his studies, Mr. Barnett had worked for three Glasgow transport concerns—Davis and Robson, Sandy Gilmour (Plant) Ltd., and Dawsons Ltd. The British Road Federation has elected Lord Chesham as its chairman, following the death of Lord Gosford, who had held office since 1962. Lord Chesham is 49, He was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport from 1959 to 1964 and the Government spokesman on transport and aviation in the House of Lords. Recently he became executive vice-chairman of the Royal Automobile Club. As chairman of the Federation, Lord Chesham becomes president of the fifth world meeting of the International Road Federation, which takes place in London next September.
S. J. B. Skyrme has been appointed a director of Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co. Ltd., following the resignation of F. K. Pointon.
BMC Service Ltd. announces the following organizational changes and new appointments. D. H. Warren, formerly director, parts operations, has been assigned to special duties concerned with product improvement, whilst retaining his directorship of BMC Service. Consequent upon this, R. Dixon, previously commercial director of the parts division, becomes director of this division. G. C. Dutton continues as director of the service technical division. Each division now has a new deputy director. For the service technical division it is R. Gifford, who for the past two years has been the executive responsible for service technical department (cars) UK. Deputy director, parts division, is R. H. Woodward. Other new appointments include S. Willetts, senior executive, warehousing; D. M. Benson, senior executive, supplies; B. L. C. Lowen, senior executive, commercial; A. Farrar, service technical manager, UK.
D. J. Meredith, assistant traffic manager with the Northern General Transport group of companies, has been appointed traffic manager of Trent Motor Traction Co. Ltd., and takes up his new duties next month.
R. V. Galley has been appointed transport supervisor of Lesney Products and Co. Ltd., London.
John Cullen has been appointed fleet engineer of the four Capon Group companies.
R. M. Van Dyck, export operations manager of Trico-Folberth Ltd., has been appointed a director of the company and also of associates Marchal Distributors Ltd. and Trico Developments Co. Ltd. He joined the Trico organization in 1948. R. L. H. Fanner, managing director of Atlas Express Ltd., has been elected the next president of the Institute of Transport. He will take office on October 1 and deliver his presidential address on October 10. Mr. Farmer joined Atlas Express in 1935 and became assistant managing director in 1936, managing director in 1940, chairman of Atlas Air Express on its formation in 1953 and later of Eurofreight Ltd. He was vice-chairman of the RHA, 1950-53, and a part-time member of the Road Haulage Disposals Board, 1953-56. Mr. Farmer's other public work included membership of the economics committee of the Road Research Board, 1954-56, of the Road Haulage Wages Council since 1963 and of the Economic Development Committee (Little Neddy) for the Movement of Exports since 1965.
W. W. Johnson has been appointed assistant managing director of International Harvester Company of Great Britain Ltd. Mr. Johnson, who will have his headquarters at the company's London office, joined International Harvester at the Minneapolis, Minnesota, motor truck district office in 1940, and in the following year transferred to the Chicago general office. In 1964 he became manager of export operations of the overseas divisions.
OBITUARY WE regret to record the deaths of Mr. Percy Smith and Mr. Sydney J. Wrigglesworth.
Mr. Smith, 74, was a director of Ellen Smith Tours Ltd., of Rochdale, Lancs.
Mr. Wrigglesworth, who was 74, was deputy managing director of Oldham and Son Ltd. until his retirement in 1959. He joined Oldham and Son in 1920 as a commercial representative and became the company's first export manager. Later he became sales manager, commercial manager and, in 1931, general manager. He was appointed to the board in 1946.
