THE maiden voyage on Friday of the m.v. "Saga" from Gothenburg, arriving at Hull on Sunday, marked the opening of a new thrice-weekly service between the UK and Sweden. It is being operated by a shipping partnership comprising Ellerman's Wilson Line. of Hull, Svea Line, of Stockholm and Swedish Lloyd, of Gothenburg.

The "Saga" will be joined later this year by "Svea" and "Spero", all three ships being roll-on ferries designed to carry 100 containers and/or trailers, 100 cars and over 400 passengers. The Hull-Gothenburg service will later be augmented by one to and from London, where a new terminal is due to be opened at Tilbury docks in the autumn.

New passenger/cargo terminals are being built at Hull and Gothenburg also and the Hull facilities were officially opened on Monday by the Minister of Transport.

The freight services are designed around unit-load systems, and shippers who send individual items in the conventional manner will have their consignments unitized in containers or on flats at the terminal.

In October, when all three ferries are in service, there will be at least nine sailings a fortnight between England and Sweden. For the time being, the one operational ferry is being joined by a new cargo carrier, the "Salerno", which is also designed to carry unit-loads and thus reduce turn-round time.

This new joint ferry service will have the company title of the England Sweden Line and, as well as bookings through the usual agencies, bookings can be made through Ellerman's Wilson Line Ltd., Commercial Road, Hull (tel: Hull 26081) or British and Northern Shipping Agency, Marlow House. Lloyds Avenue, London E.C.3. (tel: Royal 3161).

On the "Saga'sfirst return voyage from Hull on Monday, British Road Ferry Services and their Swedish partners shipped three 10m. TIR trailers, a 20ft. TIR trailer and two 20ft. Lancashire flats with loads of confectionery. sanitary ware, engineering products and wool.
