ASTRONG indication that the National Union of Railwaymen's national committee might reconsider its decision about freight liner trains was given by Mr. John Matheson, Scottish regional officer of the NUR, at the annual congress of the Scottish TUC recently.
The NUR executive had voted, with a knife-edge majority, against operating liner trains. The objection was to the British Railways' proposal that commercial road hauliers should be given access to the depots.
Mr. Matheson denied that the NUR had been taking a "Luddite" approach to the whole question, as had been suggested in some quarters.
The executive had taken its decision at a time when there had'been no talk or suggestion about the integration or co-ordination of transport. "In the new set of circumstances it may be possible that the railway unions may take a different approach. We are more than ready to do so.
