From a Special Correspondent SOUTHEND town council dealt an unexpected blow to road safety this week when it referred back to a general purposes committee meeting on June 10 the application by the organizers of the local Lorry Driver of the Year competition again to hold the contest on a closed road on Southend Industrial Estate. The Southend round is to take place on June 26.
Until this year there has been no hesitation by Southend town council. Its reason this year is alleged complaints by residents about noise from the two loudspeakers used at the contest. Residents on an industrial estate!
Negotiations are now beginning in an effort to move the contest to Basildon in future years. Meanwhile urgent representations are being made to the town council.
