WHILE the big container experiment was taking place, another development in transatlantic freight was successfully inaugurated. A boxvan semi-trailer belonging to Best Express Co., USA, arrived in London docks aboard the Cunard ship "Andania", carrying fresh fruit and vegetables preserved by the Oxytrol system, in which nitrogen is used to displace the air in the sealed van.
The cargo of strawberries, broccoli and celery hearts had been packed in the trailer in Orange County, California, where they had been gathered; they were drawn across the States by road and shipped from an Atlantic port.
Developed by the Occidental Petroleum Corp., California, and tested on the Best Express trailer fleet, Oxytrol is expected to be offered in the UK as an in-transit preservative for perishables; it does not employ low temperatures.
The first semi-trailer was unloaded within London docks (as shown above) and returned empty.
