Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WE HAVE on several previous occasions referred to the useful and well-built battery electric truck constructed by Greenwood and. Bathey, Ltd., whose distributing agents are W. Goodyear and Sons, Ltd., of Dudley.

The Greenbat, truck is made ip several different models to carry loads of 2 tons. The standard truck has a loading space of 6 ft. 8 ins, long and 3 ft. 9 ins. wide. It has three speeds in each direction and two or four-wheel steerinu as required. The single motor is series-wound and drives through worm gearing.

Other types are equipped with special low platforms, automatic elevating plat

forms with separate operating motors, side-tipping contractor's bodies and, in addition to these, trailers can be supplied suitable for haulage by the trucks. A recent development is an interestiug type of barrel-lifting truck which ffas been built for the Elder Dempster Co. This truck is of the general utility type, with an additional fitting for the handling of the barrels, this device having a capacity for barrels of 4 ft. 7 ins. diameter and weighing approximately 18 cwt., the frame of the standard truck being slightly modified and strength. enod to take the extra stresses imposed.

The barrel-handling device consists of a pair of curved jibs mounted on a

rocking shaft. At the upper end these jibs, which are connected together, are fitted with a pair of grabs or levers with hooks, which can be opened out to take a barrel. When the jibs are raised these grabs seize tha flanges of the barrel and lift it from 8 ins. to 9 ins, clear of the ground. The lower end of the jibs are curved downwards and outwards and fitted with shoes, which, when the jib is raised, push against the underside of the barrel, thus steadying it and taking ,part of the weight. The barrel thus suspended can be transported over rough ground without any risk of damage.

The operation of the jib is effected through the medium Of a pull-rod with a screw working in a nut, this nut being connected to the actuating Motor by a worm gear.

The special motor is compound-wound, and is of about 2 h.p. The whole of the gear for operating the jibs is located underneath the platform of the truck, and in this manner does not interfere with the loading space. A device is provided to litnit the travel of the jib.s in both directions, and the truck can be driven and the jibs operated from the driver's platform.

A second truck of this type has been supplied for the Elder Dempster stand at the British Empire Exhibition, and • four more are on other for their dock..
