Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• French police have resumed stopping UK-registered trucks fitted with top tanks, after almost a year of very few hold-ups.

Shropshire-based Peter Court of PJ Court & Sons had his truck impounded for two hours after being stopped near Dieppe recently. The gendarme who pulled him over demanded FF10,000 (E1,110) and only let him go after Court insisted the tank was legal and made it clear he would not pay. A year ago the Deportment of Transport and UK Customs & Excise said the French authorities had agreed to ask local police to take a more relaxed approach to vehicles fitted with extra tanks.

The DOT says hauliers using extra tanks that feed the engine via a pipe are not breaking the law.
