• The constant stream of new legislation was making it hard for hauliers to keep rates steady, Mr E. W. Voller, area chairman, told members and guests at the RHA Metropolitan and South Eastern area banquet and ball in London on Monday.
Mr. Voller said that the amenity associations would no doubt soon be attacking the lorry in the name of European Conservation Year, citing noise, fumes and so on. He said they should remember that the lorry had in fact helped their cause. History books told of the filth and pollution which accumulated in the wake of the industrial revolution, and the lorry had been one of the principal means of disposing of this, and preventing much of its recurrence.
