It's Tuesday morning and I'm writing this at the airport. I'm heading to Lyon for the launch of the all-new Renault truck range along with 5,999 other journalists and hauliers. Tonight the French manufacturer will preview a completely new model line-up to the world, which makes this one of the most significant launches I can remember.
But other than the sheer scale of the event, the other thing that separates this from other launches is that people will be genuinely surprised when the sheets are lifted. There have been numerous new truck launches recently, but in many cases the press has known what to expect. An artist's impression is usually released, or perhaps an employee will sneak a picture out of the design studio. And social media has ensured that truck enthusiasts can see new vehicles within minutes.
But Renault has played it differently, and has kept its new range under wraps. We've all seen the prototypes on the road but they've been incredibly well camouflaged. CM has been nagging Renault for weeks to get advanced images and information for this issue, but it was only yesterday afternoon that they finally succumbed — giving us two images and not a lot of information (hence the lack of detail in this issue — full story next week).
