11 Transfrigoroute was set up after the chaos of World War II and the post-war period. On 17 July 1952 the UN Economic Commission for Europe asked the International Road Transport Union to produce proposals for an international body to develop perishable goods transportation.
The objective was to guarantee the supply of temperature-controlled goods by developing an international cold chain with modern, highperformance, refrigerated vehicles.
Transfrigoroute Europe was founded on 28 March 1955 under the auspices of the IRU and was based in Basel, Switzerland. In 1956 an affiliated membership, CCT, was created for companies who could provide technical advice to operators. This provided a forum where hauliers and technical suppliers could discuss improvements to equipment and technology.
Transfrigoroute now has active national groups in 27 countries and 1,700 members who represent about 80% of the European temperature-controlled road transport market.
