by Brian Weatherley Daf's popular 95 Series tractor has been given a major upgrade, with a facelifted front and new interior trim, a lighter, more rigid chassis with all-round electronic disc brakes, torquier engines and, for the first time, the option of a ZF AS-Ironic autobox.

Outwardly, the latest XF95 has changed little, although it now incorporates new headlamps and a revised grille and surround with new spoilers and side skirts. Inside It follows the lead sat by Daf's current IF and, in particular, CF models, with an improved dash layout and a new throttle pedal position that gives more legroom.

The electronic tachograph is now mounted in the overhead console, allowing the radio to be fitted in the curving dash— available with either a wood or metallic finish—putting it within easier reach of the driver. The upper bunk is bigger and central locking becomes standard.

The XF95's chassis has been revamped to include greater lateral stiffness with no weight penalty. The chassis is now "flattopped" with most components fitted within the chassis rails. The changes have shaved about 200 kg off the 95's kerbweight.

After holding back for an inordinate amount of time, Daf has finally adopted electronically operated discs on this, its flagship tractor. The Daf-designed units feature a disc mounted on the hub via a special clamping bolt to extend its service life.

Daf's DEB engine brake is available as an option, along with a retarder which can be activated automatically when the brake pedal is pressed. The current 24-valve 12.6-litre straightsix Daf engine is retained at 430, 480 and 530hp nominal ratings with a maximum torque rating which has been increased to 2,3508m. Its compression ratio has been raised from 16.4 to 17.4;1 which, together with changes to the turbo and engine management system, is said to cut fuel consumption by up to 2%. Service intervals have been extended to 120,000km.

The latest Daf diesels continue to be backed up by a ZF 16-speed box but they now have Servo Shift assistance. Daf is also offering ZF's AS-Ironic autobox for the first time in 12 and 16-speed versions; this option will cost about £1,900.

Production of the new 095 starts in October with 4x2 and 6x2 versions. Trailingaxle 6x2s are scheduled to come on stream later in 2003, along with a new heavyhaulage version. Chassis prices are not expected to be significantly different from the current range.
