• Crime is likely to become a greater problem as home delivery grows in popularity and steps must be taken to cut the risks, according to a new government-commissioned report.
With forecasts that L34.5bn-worth of goods will be delivered to homes by 2005, new security challenges face transport companies, retailers and suppliers, according to the report New Crime Threats from E-tailing—Theft on the Home Delivery Channel.
With hght CVs three times more likely to be stolen than HGVs, the report recommends improving van security with slam door locks, alarm systems, vehicle tracking and electronic driver identification systems.
Its authors, from Heriot Watt University, also believe companies should have tighter vetting of employees, more rigorous proof of delivery systems, and greater use of anonymous packaging.
More thorough analyses of the trade-offs between security, distribution costs and customer convenience should also be conducted, they add.
