Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Lapses in security at the Calais rail-freight terminal have yet again been highlighted by a group of illegal immigrants who managed to smuggle themselves into the UK hidden in a container.

Up to 30 people used chisels and hammers to break out of the sealed container when the freight train on which they were travelling hatted temporarily in Battersea, South London.

Fourteen of the group, which included men and women, were rounded up by British Transport Police; as CM went to press the rest were still evading capture.

The police were called after the driver of another train saw an asylum seeker's head poking out of the container.

Last weekend's incident followed promises from French authorities just two weeks ago that security at the yard at Frethun, near Calais, would be stepped up.

"A security seal had been put on this container saying it had been checked and cleared," says EWS spokesman Graham Micheljohn. "You have to question the robustness of security at Frethun. This happens week in week out, despite assurances by the French authorities that this problem would be corrected."
