• by Dominic Perry More than 100 drivers from East Anglian haulage giant Murfitts Transport have been fined for breaking the hours regulations.
The drivers, most of whom are believed to be current or former employees of the just-closed
roacttrain division, appeared before Peterborough magistrates following a raid by the Vehicle Inspectorate. They were charged with a variety of offences; which included failing to take compulsory rests, working more than 90 hours in a fortnight and running with unserviceable tachographs.
Most of the drivers pleaded guilty; one of them was fined 11,250. Several others who pleaded not guilty had their cases adjourned.
Eddie Green, UK managing director for Murfitts' parent company, Norfolk Line, says the offences date back to a period last year shortly after Norfolk tine bought the firm. "A wide range of corrective action has now been taken and we believe the problem to be solved." He adds: "We are not pleased by the situation, but we have done everything we can to rectify it" A VI spokesman says there are no plans at present to take action against the firm.
• Drivers within Murfitts' roadtrain division are currently in consultation with management over its planned closure (CM 23-29 May).
