• A self-employed truck driver has been jailed for 21 months after ploughing into the back of a stationary car and killing the driver. Warwick Crown Court heard that the accident, at Junction 2 of the MO, was caused by loss of concentration.
Jason Wire had set off from Panther Distribution in Rugby during the morning rush hour and was involved in the accident 15 minutes later. The queue of traffic had been visible for some distance ahead but he only braked less than a second before impact.
Wire, who pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, was also given a five-year driving ban. The judge said he had shown a reckless lack of attention which was not just momentary.
Road safety group Brake says that Wire's sentence seems lenient considering the seriousness of the offence. We want to see more resources made available to investigate crashes so courts are in a better position to impose sentences which reflect the seriousness of people's actions," says policy manager Cathy Keeler.
Panther MD Wilson Barrett says Class 1 driver Wire had been driving an 18-tonne Scania curtainsider. "He had worked for us on occasion before without mishap."
