• Financial hardship in the road transport sector appeared to worsen last month with seven companies forced to call in a receiver, compared with five cases of receivership and administration order appointments recorded by accountants Deloitte & Touche during April, and four in March.
There were two road haulage failures in May 1995.
Five of last month's victims belonged to the Cardiff-based group Blueline Holdings; Chris
Kershaw Transport of Manchester also went to the wall.
For the year to the end of May a total of 27 road hauliers went into receivership, compared with 20 in the same period last year and 22 in 1994.
As a whole, British business suffered 129 business failures in May; up 11% on April. The North-West was worst hit, with several groups collapsing in the construction industry. London and the South-East recorded 41 failures; 12 fewer than April.
