• More than 100 jobs will be cut at Leyland Bus, Workington by August, leaving a workforce of just over 300.
Debt plea
• The RHA is to ask Prime Minister John Major to introduce a statutory right for small firms to claim interest on debts not paid after 45 days. It also wants tougher measures introduced to stop rogue directors setting up in business again after a coMpany has gone bust.
No smoking
• The UK has persuaded the EC to set tough environmental standards for trucks and buses, said Roads and Traffic Minister Christopher Chope this week. New emission rules take effect across Europe in 1992/93 and 1995/96.
Elephant route
• The first likely toll road in the UK — the 53km Birmingham Northern Relief Road — will be a "white elephant" because hauliers will refuse to use it, according to FTA Midlands director Martin Richards.
