Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

When driving my eight-wheel tipper can I split the 45-minute rest break into three 15-minute breaks, or do I have to drive for three hours, take a 15-minute break, drive for 11/2 hours and then take a 30-minute break, then repeat the same pattern in the 41/2 hours' driving in the afternoon?

A You can divide the

45-minute break into shorter breaks of at least 15 minutes each, but you will have to arrange them so that any period of 41/2 hours' driving contains — or contains and ends with — rest breaks totalling 45 minutes.

The official view now is that a day is not divided into two separate 41/2-hour driving periods, each containing its 45 minutes of rest breaks. Any period during the day which contains 41/2 hours' driving must also contain — or contain and end with — a total of 45 minutes rest breaks.
