Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A driver told me that his tractor unit can use the outside lane of a three-lane motorway when it is used without a trailer because it is less than six tonnes. The tractor is a Mercedes-Benz 1617 /1x2. Is he right?

A No. He has probably been pulling your leg. A goods vehicle with a permitted maximum weight over 7.5 tonnes is banned from the right-hand lane of a motorway which has three or more lanes open for traffic.

As its designation suggests, the 1617 tractor has a permitted maximum weight as a solo tractor of at least 16 tonnes and, as an artic, of 24 tonnes.

By the way, goods vehicles which have a permissible maximum weight of not over 7.5 tonnes, but which are over 3.050kg unladen, are also banned from the right-hand lane.
