fi wo international drivers from Croydon-based theatrical remover Radcliffe Transport have embarked on what is claimed to be the first trucking mercy mission to Albania, which until recently was virtually closed to Westerners.
Steven Lefevre and Adrian Scanlon set off for the port of Durres last week with a trailer load
of medicine, food and blankets, supplied by the organisation Feed the Children, They planned to take the ferry from Trieste in Italy rather than risk the trip through strife-torn Yugoslavia.
The supplies are destined for schools and homes for the disabled. A general strike in Albania has left the economy in chaos and thousands of people hungry.
Radcliffe and its parent, company Hoults of Enfield, part of the NFC, were also involved in the relief effort for the Kurdish refugees. This time, though, the trip is not entirely for charity. Lefevre and Scanlon hope to pick up a return load for the Royal Ballet in Trieste.
The Hawk hopes to have more details and pictures from the trail-blazing trip in future issues.
