• The Walter Alexanderbodied Iveco TurboCity doubledecker was one of the main attractions at the UITP exhibition in Stockholm.
A 10.7m prototype, powered by a six-cylinder 9.5-litre turbocharged diesel debuted at the show. It has an R-type aluminium single-door body and alloy wheels to compensate for the massive Iveco TurboCity-U chassis, bringing its unladen weight down to 10,820kg.
Harry Chambers, Iveco Ford's bus division manager,
says that the 97-passenger bus marks the first stage in Iveco's plans for the full-size UK bus market — it will be launched here next October at the NEC show.
Volvo was at the UITP show with a full-scale front-section mock-up of the ultra-low prototype it is building with Swedish bodybuilder Saffle.
The design is reminiscent of the Leyland Commutabus of the mid-sixties, which did not get beyond the display stage. The twin-steer Volvo bus is planned to run on 445mm wheels to reduce wheelarch intrusion and maximise gangway width. A rear-mounted drive-train is expected to be derived from Volvo's BlOR programme.
Also at the UITP was Scania's low-floor N113-based bus, built last year in Finland for the city of Tampere. The Wiima-bodied bus has a boarding height of 350mm and is designed to run on low sulphur fuel.
Scania has employed a Norwegian specialist to develop lowemission technology in naturalgas engines for PCV use.
