COMMERCIAL vehicle sales the United Kingdom hit thi lowest May level for 22 yez last month, with a 29 per ce fall from 1980's 24,444 to 17,32 Figures released this week the Society of Motor ManufE turers and Traders show if Ford maintained its traditior lead, but with a total of 5,6 lorries and vans, against 8,230 May 1980.
Lorry and artic sales over fell from 6,175 to 3,562, of whi 2,671 were British. Non-car c rived van sales fell from 10,7 to 8,431, of which 5,289 we British, and car-derived vi sales dropped from 6,568 4,579, of which 3,847 we British.
Even the hitherto expandir light 4 x 4 sector, which sells the leisure market, fell from 9: to 752, with Land-Rover (t) only British make) droppir from 577 to 336. Importers i creased their sales, though, wi sales rising from 346 to 416.
A forecast published last we( said there will be a 3.5 per cc increase in commercial vehic sales next year, with van sal( starting to pick up in 1983, but also indicated that sales France, Italy and West Germar will drop sharply this year.
