Dick Ross, whose splendid photographs have adorned Commercial Motor for 34 years, retired in a blaze of glory that he found both gratifying and embarrassing. An unofficial strike of Southern Region railwayman failed to keep vveltwishers away from his farewell party at this office, where he was showered with gifts from IPC, his colleagues and friends in the industry.

If the XCM Club —a fraternity of former members of the editorial staff — had not deferred its presentation to Dick for a Thamesside lunch party in Oxfordshire, he would have had to hire a van to take home all the tributes to his popularity.

A surprise element was a "This Is Your Life" presentation by Arthur Sherlock-Mesher, the oldest surviving ex-editor of Commercial Motor (or, as he claimed, the oldest surviving ex

editor of anything), which had been master-minded by lain Sherriff, the present incumbent It comprised a bound, goldblocked, illustrated volume and a tape recording of reminiscences of Dick, whose career has been a combination of fun, danger, self-sacrifice anc plodding hard work. I, count it a privilege to have worked with him.
