A 1943 Canadian Ford V8 Bator gun tractor that had served all over the North African desert and Europe was being used as recovery vehicle by a bus company in southern England+ when Tony Pearce, director of Grange Cavern Military Museu in North Wales, found it. After restoration he put it on exhibition.
But it still had work to do. During the past winter Tony toc it and a 37-year-old Ford Jeep c an exploration of the Qattara Depression in North Africa, which is to be flooded in an Egyptian hydro-electric power scheme. The expedition was frustrated by the war between Iraq and Iran and strained relations between Libya and Egypt, but a more successful reconnaissance may be mounted later this year.
As a one-time Bofors gunner my favourite tractor was the Morris Six-wheeler. My outstanding recollection of the Canadian Ford V8 is of its appalling gearbox, although it power, once a gear had been engaged, was impressive.
