LONDON TRANSPORT's decision to give its entire 1982 double-de( bus order to Leyland could force Metro-Cammell Weyrnann to a) almost half its Birmingham workforce at present engaged in built ing Metrobuses.
Although no redundancies have been announced, a MCW spokesman told CM that the loss of the LT order, coupled with the severe drop in demand for double deckers, would mean the
company would have to slit down.
It was disappointed and mys1 fied by the LT decision as rem engineering reports were goc and confirmed MCW's faith the Metrobus design.
The company would contint. to back the model and market along with its new Mark 2 a Apollo body structures.
LT replacement Policy in r cent years has been to repla its 2,000-strong Fleetline fle with similar numbers of Tito and Metrobuses.
Leyland's closure of its P Royal factory stopped Titan liveries and MCW then increas production of Metrobuses laying down a new producti line specifically for LT.
For Leyland, the LT order m represent a major relief and cure the future of the Nation Titan plant at Workington, ready hit hard by the fall demand for National 2 sin deckers.
Production of Titans started Workington in January, but London order is unlikely to g crate the new employment portunities originally anticipa but "will greatiy enhance security at the plant," accord to Leyland. Unemployment West Cumbria is curren aproaching 20 per cent.
