THE GOVERNMENT was last week pressed to recommend a passenger transport authority for Greater London, but Transport Secretary, Norman Fowler, refused to give a snap answer.
Cyril Townsend (Conservative, Bexleyheath), recalled that the last time Labour controlled Couty Hall, its transport policies led to a fares increase of 130 per cent, and a rate increase of 235 per cent.
Mr Fowler, who said he had written to GLC leader Ken Livingstone to suggest a meeting to discuss transport policy in London, noted that the issue which caused most concern at the moment was that, if the GLC was to implement the kind of proposals it put forward, it would cost the ratepayers about £90m merely for the rest of the year.
The cost to London ratepayers, both domestic and industrial, would be E200m in a full year, and he believed that the GLC would do well to think twice before introducing a policy costing that much money.
