THE FIRST-EVER temperature controlled storage and distribution vehicles and equipment exhibition was held at the National Exhibition Centre last week, reports STEVE GRAY.

The exhibition occupied only about two thirds of Hall 3A, but despite its compact size, it was well represented by vehicle builders including Alcan, Transport Products, York, Tidd, Gray and Adams, and Boalloy.

Tidd showed its new grp reefer, as did York with its cooperative Thermovan. The Tidd vehicle has a grp outer skin, bonded with plywood, pvc and polyurethane for insulation.

Grp sections are jointed using alloy extrusions, and there is no subframe. The walls, floor, roof, and front bulkhead are built from 100mm (4in) thick grip/plywood/polyurethane sandwiches.

At the rear, a stainless steel frame is used, and Tidd has incorporated double doors or a roller rear door which meets ATP regulations.

This has grp/plywood/polyure• thane slats which run up into the roof. Inside, chequer plate overlay flooring is bonded directly on to the floor, and an integral kickstrip is curved and bonded to the sidewalls to form an air and watertight seal.

Tidd says alternative floors can be specified. It also says its triple sealed panels keep their k value, and help achieve and maintain ATP standards for six years. Another point, according to Tidd is its bolt-on subframe, which allows the axle configurations to be changed to suit differing load patterns or to meet new regulations. York's Thermovan reefer is a joint effort with the French Klege France body builder, and is marketed in Britain with Davenport Vernon which handles that company's rigid vehicles.

York manufactures a special low neck (4in) trailer to accommodate the Klege France bodywork. It has no crossmembers or outriggers, the body being attached by special fixings, and this adds up to a very low tare weight — less than 7000kg (15,432Ib1.

The side wall core for the reefer is made from expand pvc, and York says it possess better mechanical thermal a chemical properties than po urethane. This core sandwiched, using a pressL epoxy resin bonding proce: between alloy linings.

No interior parts are need for the van, says York as t panels are self supporting. F the flooring, a special carboru dum 'mixture is fused into po ester.

Wincanton had two vehicl on its stand. The first, a 16-ti reefer had a new Dawnpre panel design for great durabilli while a 3.5 ton gross Fiat Da had been designed to incorp rate Load-lok track for SME bulky goods. It had triple re doors and removable shelvii modules.

Successful trials of the Boalli insulated Tautliner has led t company to enter the contra' temperature field. Based I Crane Gruehauf running ge, the insulated Tautliner at t TCS & D exhibition wi equipped with Petter PDL 50 I equipment.

Yet another new reefer, aim at retail distribution, was show by Wadharn Stringer (V tory) Ltd. It had a dual tempe tura body designed to carry I temperature frozen produce higher temperature dairy goo The organisers of the TCS exhibition said they expec around 5,000 visitors during three-day show.
