• A saving of 15cwt has been achieved in two new refrigerated vehicles recently supplied by Blox Refrigeration Services Ltd. (formerly Blox (Polar Blast) Services Ltd.) to Castle Frozen Foods Ltd.
The vehicles, which are based on Bedford KDL 151in. wheelbase chassis. use eutectic hold-over plates to keep a guaranteed temperature of minus 10deg F. Instead of the usual wall and ceiling mounted plates two 9ft 6in. by 2ft by 11in. plates have been mounted on each side to form shelves and two 7ft by 2ft by 1 lin. plates have been mounted on the ceiling.
This has meant wider shelves as no space is used up by the wall-mounted plates and a weight saving of 15cwt as interior furniture is reduced.
No covering is required for the plate shelves as the vehicles are used for frozen foods— they would be necessary if chilled goods were carried. The body is built in 18 gauge half-hard aluminium and the insulation is from 5in. foam polystyrene slabs. An AS 300 Prestcold condensing unit (3 h.p.) is used for refrigeration. A "loheat" heating system is fitted to the single rear door.
