• The winner of the Perkins Drivers Club "Member of The Year" competition, held at the Perkins Eastfield factory, Peterborough, in brilliant sunshine on Saturday, was Mr W. A. Brooks, of Torquay, Devon, Mr Brooks, a driver for the Western Fuel Co. Ltd., scored 149 points, won £60 and a weekend for two at the Blackpool illuminations later this year. Second was Mr W. Adams, 130 points, of Mansfield, Notts., who won £25 and third (£10} was Mr L. Biggins, 124 points, of Sheffield, Yorks. T.he prizes were presented by the Mayor of Peterborough at a special "Club Night" held that evening in the town.
In several ways this year's competition differed from previous events. For example Mrs Wendy Batcheler, of Windsor, Barks, an ambulance driver with Barks County Ambulance Service, was the first woman driver ever
to compete in a final: Mr A. Bullock, of Malvern Link. Worcs., was competing in his fourth final: and Mr G. Dodson was the first champion to qualify in a final in successive years.
This year was the first time that the final has been held at the Eastfield factory and also the first time that the finalists in each class have driven the same vehicle. The competitors in the "'vehicle" class used a 6.354 Perkins powered Seddon, in the "light van" class a Perkins Ford Transit, and the only tractor driver, Mr J. Punch, of Donoughmore, Co. Cork, used a 135 Massey-Ferguson and trailer, also Perkins powered.
The finalists, who had all correctly answered a questionnaire in the Perkins Driver, the club's newspaper, had to complete a course of five driving tests and a 12-question paper.
