Companies and Councils Stall on Pay Claims

NO settlement of the claims of the unions for increased pay for some 180,000 provincial company' and municipal busmen has been reached.
The unions are also demanding payment at time-and-a-quarter, instead of at the present rate of an extra 3d. an hour, for night work. In addition, the companies have been asked to introduce pension schemes.
Representing the companies, the National Council for the Omnibus Industry on Monday referred the demands to a special committee, in accordance with the council's constitution. This was done after the employers had replied to the unions' case. It is understood that they made no offer during their two-hour meeting. The special committee is due to meet in London on June 24.
Similar action was taken last Friday by the National Joint Industrial Council for the road passenger transport industry, representing municipal undertakings. A subcommittee of both sides of the NJ.I.C. will meet on Tuesday to consider the matter further. If agreement cannot be reached the claim will be submitted to arbitration.
